Oh my goodness! Where does the time go?

I know it's been a while since I've posted anything. Holidays and all that, plus I traveled up

to Oregon to visit my Dad for his birthday and was gone a while for that.

You never know about the weather up there this time of year and look

what greeted me the first morning...

Lovely, silent snow!

I know many of you out there have had your fill of snow, but

for a Southern California gal it was a fun surprise!

Beautiful to see, but too chilly to really be outside

trying to take any photos.

It was much more comfy to sit and enjoy the little Hummers through the big picture window.

We had homemade lemon cake and Southern Chess Pie

for my Dad's birthday! Very yummy!

After the snow, came the rain, and lots of it. So much so,

that it flooded the little nearby

town of Turner, Oregon.

We were able to drive around a bit the next day and you could

see where the rivers were still overflowing their banks.

I spotted this fellow on an embankment, enjoying the extra damp.

A Nutria!

Their name sounds more like a food bar than an animal

but it actually means, "mouse beaver".

They look like a cross between a beaver and a large rat. They're no

lightweights and can weigh up to 20lbs! They were

imported from South America, and have now set up residence in many places

across North America.

I had a lovely visit and look what I woke up to on my last day.

Before my trip I'd misplaced my camera's battery charger. Oh poo.

I ordered one sent up to my Dad's and I guess the camera goblins were not appeased ,

because the new one didn't work! Phooey!

I'm sure the misplaced charger will magically appear once I buy another one. lol

After I returned from my trip I unfortunately had a little call into the Paramedics.

It seems the bottom fell out of my Magnesium. Muscle spasm's galore, and no fun I can tell you!

But, that's another story and I'm on the mend, so.....

that's the scoop for now. :-)

Sneak Peek for tomorrow night!

Where in the world has the year gone? Oh my goodness!

It was a lovely Christmas holiday and in one days time, here it is another New Year.

Tomorrow (Saturday) night (9:00pm EST) brings us the last 2011 Ehag Emporium, and I wanted to give you

a hint of a sneak peek of the little fellow I'll have available.

It's a great feeling to be caught up with commissions, and I'm excited about all the

pieces that are already in the works for 2012, albeit for a couple of Christmas stragglers

that I still need to put in my Etsy shop.

I have some new Bunnies and birdies in the works, WhooHoo!, so stay tuned!

It's a beautiful sunny Christmas morning here in Southern California.

The horses are trotting.

The tree is shiny and bright

The Nesting Dolls are nesting.

The antique Scottish hutch is aglow with country charm.

The trees branches are heavily laden with vivid and cherished memories

of people and joyous times past and present.

I'd like to take this moment to thank all of you for stopping by my blog and leaving your kind

comments and support this past year, and I'm looking forward to more!

I'm so very grateful for all of my online and in person friends and I'm so

appreciative for your patronage. I very much

wish you all good fortune and health, as we begin another year.

May we all practice, share and experience kindness, love and peace to all.

The best Fruit Cake Cookies ever!

The Holly and the Ivy,

When they are both full grown,

Of all the trees that are in the wood,

The holly bears the crown.

Today is perfect decorating and baking weather, with a gentle rain falling,

and a fire in the fireplace... ahhhh.

In addition to the tree in the living room, this year

I decided to put up a small tree in the front den and

built a little mountain village on top of the bookcase.

What do you think?

The tree is nestled in a turn of the century wooden bucket for a stand,

and it has several vintage ornaments to add to that old world feel.

I wanted to share our family favorite Fruit Cake Cookie recipe with all of you.

These cookies are SO good, and even folks who don't care

for fruit cake LOVE these!

Put on the kettle for a lovely cup of tea or a dark roast coffee with these delicious cookies,

and hey, they're one of Santa's favorites too! :-)

Fruit Cake Cookies

1/2lb candied cherries chopped

1/2 lb candied Pineapple chopped

1lb candied mixed fruit chopped

1lb white/golden raisins

1lb broken Pecans

Cream 1 stick butter and 1 cp brown sugar~

Add, 4eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Mix, 2cps flour with

3 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1tsp cinnamon

1tsp cloves

1tsp Nutmeg

Add to cream mixture with 2 Tbsp, sweet milk (reg whole milk) and

1/2 cp sherry, brandy, wine or grape juice.

Mix 1 cp flour with the fruit and Nuts and add to the mixture.

Drop from Tbsp onto greased cookie sheet.

Bake 300 degrees (f), about 20mins.

These cookies ripen, just as fruit cake does and they're are so yummy

that even folks who don't like fruit cake, LOVE these!

Where have I been?

Some of you may not know that in addition to my art, I'm also

a certified Equinology Equine Body Worker, slowly working on a Master's in Equine Sports Therapy.

The last two weeks I've been up in Petaluma, California attending two classes.

Both classes were outstanding. The first was at the magnificent, Circle Oak Equine, with Dr. Kerry Ridgeway one of the top Accupressure/Alternative and IntegrativeVets, Narrelle Stubbs, Physiotherapist for the Australian Olympic Equestrian Team, and Nicole Rombach, Structural and Cervical Specialist from the UK.

All of whom presented us with

amazing techniques, case studies and state of the art information,

new to the equine world, and it was most enlightening.

The second class was an extra thrill because I was the

videographer for the well known founder of TTouch,

Linda Tellington-Jones. Here she's demonstrating the proper techniques to me,

and my classmates at Flying Cloud Farm.

A Vibrant Petaluma Sunrise

I had a couple of free days to explore the countryside and came across this

wonderful live steam attraction called Traintown, in Sonoma, CA.

If you ever have a chance to stop in, this is a wonderful relaxing place to take the

family. It's reminiscent of gentler times, with lovely ponds, waterfalls, a petting zoo, and of

course the magnificent trains that take you on an ever changing ride over bridges, past waterfalls, with a stop at a little scale town to visit the animals... just wonderful! A must see for the little ones!

Vineyards at 45 miles per hour!... Not too bad ay?

Yes, that was a real Cow, or Steer.

When I got home, I decided to tackle refinishing the front door. A word of advice...

I'd refinished this door about 7 years ago and was talked into using the then new, water based

Polyurethane.... Bad idea for an exterior door, as it just didn't hold up. So, I sanded it down and after staining with a nice Mahogany stain, I applied two coats of SparVarnish and Viola! :-)

Ha Ha! It's not always that easy...

I'd applied the second coat of varnish late in the afternoon, and didn't

notice the heavy fog coming in. I went outside to find everything dripping with dampness and the

door was completely fogged over white. Ahhh!

I quickly got the door in the house, and cranked up the heat hoping it wasn't too late to hopefully evaporate

the moisture that had settled.

Success!

After two hours the nice glossy shine had once again returned, apparently no worse for the wear. Whew!

So that's where I've been and what I've been up to. This has been an eclectic trip tick, that's for certain.

I have a pile of tiny JOL pumpkins, snowmen ornaments, bird ornaments,

grinning gourd goblins, some miniatures, and even a Christmas Chickie or two coming up shortly. Oh yes, did I mention, Jury duty? Dang.

Welcome the Autumn Mist

The Summer faded and we welcomed in the Autumn and it's

rich colors, morning fog, and wood smoke filled air.

This year the fall displays at Roger's Gardens was as glorious as ever

and I just had to capture some of the colors of the season.

I've always loved those little Goat carts, filled to overflow

with pumpkins and squash of every shape, size and color.

The Ehag Emporium is coming up as is of course, Halloween!

Fun with Creative Paperclay!

Introducing ....

The flamboyant, frilly and lover of everything pink,

The Moon of Hearts and her Flamingo,"Fontaine"!

How in the world do you start on a project like this?

First, I make certain I have plenty of Creative Paperclay on hand!

Next I create a foundation for my pieces with either entirely Paperclay,

or Aluminum Foil for larger projects.

You can begin shaping a rough form with your hands, then

begin pinching it tighter and with greater detail using needle nose pliers.

This is a wonderful way to play with your shapes and different compositions.

Notice I've used Aluminum Armature wire to join together the Moon head to her body.

I also use the Armature wire for things like spindly legs and long delicate bits.

This wire is strong, but relatively easy to bend and work with.

Next, it's time to break out your Paperclay!

Generally I begin by rolling the clay into a ball shape, approximately the size of the object I'm making.

Then you want to flatten it, using either the heels of your hands, or a rolling pin. I also work with a ziplock bag and keep my unused clay in there, removing only what I need.

It's helpful to have a jar of water at the readiness, to dip your fingers in when the clay begins to feel a bit dry.

Use just a touch of water though, as you don't want to over wet the clay.

Now begin to press and mold the Paperclay around your foil shape, smoothing and adding details as you go.

Don't forget to use photo references as a visual aid, when possible.

This is "Squishie", a baby Flamingo, and he was my reference

for this cute fellow below.

Rather than present an entire sculptural tutorial today, I thought I'd share some techniques that you can

use on any Paperclay project to help your pieces look more finished and professional.

Often when sculpting, it can sometimes be challenging, especially for beginners, to achieve

a smooth finish with just your fingers or sculpting tools. An advantage

of Paperclay is that you can sand, carve and drill it after it's dried which is fantastic.
It's also VERY light weight, which is wonderful!

Ideally, I prefer to make my pieces as smooth as possible before it dries, because

not only do I love the look, but it's a real time saver when prepping for painting.

A favorite technique for smoothing, is to have a round paintbrush on hand, of the appropriate size,

and dip it into the jar of water and very very gently brush it across the clay, again being careful not to

get it too wet or you'll wash away your finely worked details.

This water and paintbrush technique, allows you to stretch the working time with

your Paperclay, and helps to remove unwanted tool marks and blemishes giving your

work a much more finished look.

Now....

Combine that with a few feathers,

a dash of glitter on a heart shaped collar,

a few washes of paint, and fabric,

and you have a wonderful art piece!

little bones that dangle to complete her Halloween look.

She has fun feather witch hair and orange and black striped socks.

Herchel Hayseed and the tale of the missing Acorns

Little Herchel, the country Bun-kin has been samplin the squirrel's stash of acorns.

He et a might too much,

(but then,his eyes are always bigger than his stomach)

and he's decided to set a spell before headin out to the corn field

to nibble on a cob-o-knob or two,

then out to the garden for a mater samich,

and finally back home fer supper an some fine griddle cornbread. Yum.

A bit of a sneak peek for the Ehag Emporium on the 31st!

I've been busy of late, catching up. Bits of this and that,

which when combined together take rather alot of time.

The garden, administering horse therapies, my MFR therapy, researching art styles and

practicing new techniques. I'm always fasinated by the skills of other artists, and make it

a hobby of sorts in looking closely and studying their craftsmanship.

I love the challenge of taking it all in, changing it up,

and attempting to create something out of my usual comfort zone. I ventured out and have played with a bit of fabric with this piece and I'm very happy with it.When it's comes together, it's very satisfying, when it doesn't quite hit the mark, well, I always hear the voice of

the master Carousel woodcarver that I once apprenticed with ....saying,

"We never make mistakes... ...

We make rapid changes in the design."

... Thank you Welby!

I've also been working on several smaller pieces, ornaments, pumkins, and even a Chickie Witch, that will be available in my Etsy shop very soon so be sure to check back.

Our daily critters...

When describing to folks the various creatures that live in my yard,

the question invariably comes up, "You live in the city?" Yes, indeed.

This morning for example I came across our opossum friend, who we

usually see on the fence every night, but for some strange reason he, or she was out and about in the morning light, browsing among my orchids.

There are lots of Western Lizards living in the garden and I often find them in the aviary

looking for eggs. Don't worry.. I catch them and release them back into the garden.

One day I was hosing fallen debris off the blue spruce leaves and one clump of leaves just

wouldn't budge. It was then that I realized that it was not a clump of leaves but a lizard that had been

sunning himself up in the tree and he'd been hanging on for dear life while he was blasted with water. Sorry about that fella!

Every night, especially in the summer, the Raccoon family comes to visit. They play in the pond looking for the frogger that lives there, and we've even seen them indulging themselves by

swimming in the spa. This youngster was having a grand time away from his parents and climbed up on the fence and was peeping in the living room!

California being a desert climate, you'll find Black Widow spiders in abundance.

I happened to spot this one not far (but outside) the sliding glass door. Boogery!

This is a young grasshopper. The last couple of years the grasshoppers have had a field day

in the garden and in particular, are enjoying my roses.... silly monkeys!

I'll close with the Trumpet Vine or Bower Vine.

This plant was a gift from my Grandma. It was merely a bare twig 4 inches high when it arrived in the mail 20yrs ago, and now it's a vibrant plant that climbs the pine tree and graces the garden with brilliant color every year as a beautiful reminder of her.

The Humming Birds in particular love this flower.

Just a fun little side note...

When I was about 8yrs old we held a little musical of sorts at

Westside Christian Church.

There was a wonderful man there named Art Williams who everyone just adored. He was from Cornwall, England and came to the USA in the 30's to work at the movie studios, predominantly MGM.

Oh, the stories he would tell! He was a ship builder and a special effects man and worked on such classics as Mutiny on the Bounty, National Velvet and The Wizard of Oz. He would tell us about developing the trap door for the Wicked Witch of the East to magically appear in Munchkin land, with the flames and smoke. Gosh we miss him.

Anyway, he use to coach all of us kids in staging and singing for little events, and for this particular show, he turned each of us into a popular celebrity of that time.... and here is the tie in to today's holiday, and the first song on my Playlist today.

He made me into the grand 1930's singer Kate Smith.

Bare in mind I was a slightly built child so to help with the illusion, he fashioned a coconut bra of sorts, and I wore Smiths trademark Navy dress with broad padded

shoulders and a white collar. I learned the proper stance, how to gesture,

where to look and how to lip sync.

I walked out onto the stage and nervously belted out

God Bless America, as only Kate Smith could do.

Ahhh, those were the days. :-)

This month my piece is a handcarved vintage style folk art Uncle Sam Cow.

Complete with a red and white striped vest, a patriotic red hat with a blue hatband with white stars, and formal spats. He is hand carved out of hardwood, and is done in a vintage and distressed Folk Art style.

His tail and ears are made of leather and there is a bit of wood burning for added detail. He's hand painted and his carving tool marks were left as a sign of the carvers hand. He’s ready to add touch of Americana to your old shelf or hutch. Uncle Sam Cow measures a healthy 14” long; 4” wide (7” including his ears); and 9” high to the top of his hat.

PFATT Charity Auction for breast cancer awareness

This Sunday, June 12th, 2011 the PFATT group will begin a charity auction

on Ebay to benefit breast cancer research.

The PFATT artists will be donating hand made ornaments which will hang on a

cream colored goose feather tree

which will be auctioned in it's entirety.

Horses are so much a part of my life, and that's why I chose to sculpt a horse for my ornament. White horses tend to be associated with the Hero, strong, liberating, positive and protective energy.

He's hand sculpted of Paperclay, with just a touch of pink on his banner reading, "strength". (I'm not one for pink), and glitter for the spark of life.

The auction will go from Sunday to Sunday. June 12- 19

so I guess they're happy and like their new shade house!

Remembering Uncle Kenny...

This Memorial Day had an even more personal meaning this year as last week

our family lost our dear Uncle Kenny.

Kenny was at Pearl Harbor on that fateful day in 1941, and to hear him tell the stories of seeing the Zero pilots faces as they flew low,

brought history back to the forefront.

He was also in the Korean War conflict as a Naval Seabee and devoted 27 years to the Long Beach Naval Ship yard.

Kenny was a master wood worker and a visit to his shop was like visiting The New Yankee Workshop, but with a slightly rustic flair,with every tool imaginable hanging from the walls, rafters, and tucked in drawers. The smell of freshly cut aromatic wood was sweet perfume, with undertones of lacquers and stains.

A quiet, unassuming family man, with bear paw hands, a heart of gold and a mile wide smile.

He's greatly missed.

The month seems to be dashing by at lightning speed. Just thought I would share one of my works in progress. This frog fellow is right at home perched atop his little pumpkin.

Speaking of little pumpkins....

I've always had fun with seeing how long a pumpkin from the previous season will last.

So far this one is doing pretty well, although I noticed there's a hint of mold dust on the backside.

He was bought in Sept of 2010 and I think he looks pretty good in the May garden!

I'm now in the monthly PFATT Marketplace, which updates tomorrow!

I'd mentioned that I went to the Mary Lou Heard Memorial Garden Tour

this last weekend, and I thought that I would share some of the lovely sights of the day

throughout a few postings.

For years it was thought that many wonderful flowers that you might only

see growing on the east coast, would not do well here in the California desert like weather. But an amazing lady named Mary Lou Heard, was instrumental in cultivating and selling old fashioned cottage perennials, that not only survived but indeed thrived. Mary Lou was a wonderful lady who owned a small but mighty garden shop in Westminster, California.

You never knew what amazing new things you'd see from visit to visit.

Flowers such as "Love in a Mist", "Queen Anne's lace", or "Picasso's Petunia".

Today's post is from the garden of my friend Peggy.

It was her first time to exhibit and despite some previous gusty wind, the

weather was perfect, and everything just came together for an ideal day.

Flowers have spoken to me more than I can tell in written words. They are the hieroglyphics of angels, loved by all men for the beauty of their character, though few can decipher even fragments of their meaning.

I'm off to a garden tour for the day so I'm listing my Ehag Emporium piece a tad early.

This is the Potion Mistress, mounted atop a sign that reads

Black Hat Potions.

She is hand sculpted out of Papermache and her stragly white hair is sheeps wool.

I've cut the sign in the shape of a witch's hat, faintly seen behind the witch.

There are bat wings made of wire behind the witch's head as well.

The sign is distressed, with copper tacks and acrylic paint.

The Potion Mistress sees all and she awaits the ideal doorway to adorn!

Loved all the horses!
The only stumble in the entire procession was an uncommon fall from one of the horses.
I guess the cheering crowd was too much for this fellow!

Fortunately, neither horse or it's 19yr old rider appeared to be hurt, and the horse made straight for home – the stables of the Horse Guards’ Barracks further up Whitehall .

Years ago, my folks and I used to go to a wonderful place (which is unfortunately gone now) called the Antique Guild, in Tustin, California. This was a wonderland warehouse of antiques galore that had just been brought over from England and Europe, and you never knew what kind of treasure or piece of history you might find. Within it's cavernous walls they had an area called, "scratch and dent", for the unfortunate bits that arrived somewhat the worse for wear. Sideboards might be missing a carved Renaissance style cherub, or the 200year old hide glue had let go it's grip from an old English Carousel animal and it was now in pieces and in a box waiting to be reassembled by some loving hand. You just never knew what you'd find, and of course, this was in the days before Ebay when you just didn't see things like this.

One visit, I happened to spot a wonderful cast iron door propped up in a box along with a small knob of some sort, and a rusted out iron box still full of ash. Being attracted to anything old and laden with rust, I began searching for what it might have come from and got my Mom involved searching as well. Jackpot! We found this wonderful old Victorain wood burning stove/range from Manchester England.

We had the perfect place for it and bought it on the spot.

It took three men and a mule to lift it, but

for nearly 35 years now, when people first come in the front door of our house,

one of the first things they see is this lovely old stove.

I decorate it for each holiday, and thought I'd start sharing my stove creations with you this year.

Sunday Delight...

My Mom and I went down to Roger's Gardens in Newport, to see the Spring flowers and

oh my goodness...

what a display!

Not only did we enjoy the flowers but we got a chance to see fellow EHAGer, Vergie Lightfoot's

amazing Spring kittie collection. Like so many other artists work, photos cannot express how wonderful her work is in person. Fantastic!

We also saw such beauties as this purple Anemone above.

Then there were the many varieties of Cineraria, and we had to come home with these two.

This Clematis is the first of the blooms on my plant here at home and this year

it's just loaded with buds. Hooray!

What they say about Perennials is true...

The first year they sleep;

The next year they creep;

They were everywhere!

The main room at Rogers had these large Horses overhead and birch branches eye-hooked together

hanging in the background, and it gave the impression of a wooded forest around the room.

The Double Delight in my garden is really budding out with the heat we've had these last few days.

This was a wall of ferns at Rogers. I thought it interesting how they combined

Maidenhair, Chinese Painted, Birds Nest fern (to name a few), and Bromeliads to a cooling effect

behind this restful fountain.

WIPed into shape....

So after much ado, then procrastination, fiddling about, then more ado, I decided to say adieu to

trying to sew actual little clothes for my gentleman bun, and just sculpted them instead.

I must say, I have SO much admiration for the artists that make the clothing for their creations. For some reason, messing about with the needle and thread somewhat manifests to me as, instead of writer's block, something of a sewer's block or something. For now, I'll have to conclude I'm meant to do otherwise ... which I must say, I'm VERY happy about.

Does anyone else out there find sewing a challenge? I've made a Renaissance Faire costume for my horse and I years ago, but that was over sized and it seems much easier to hide a mis-stitch on larger projects.

As my Grandma Tinnon used to say (she was an excellent seamstress by the way),

"On a galloping horse, no one will notice!"

Now, if only my art customers were on galloping horses! Ha!

No, I've not given up, just putting tiny sewing on the back burner. What a relief!!!

At any rate, here are some of my works in progress, awaiting paint.

I also have a couple of small paintings in the works as well.

The flowers in bloom this week are ravishing red.

My Mr Lincoln rose has gone crazy and is loaded with blooms.

The Abutilon over the pond is loaded down with flowers as well.

The Salvia is looking lovely too.

The yellow of gold is an orangish-yellow,

Much the same as this big eyed fellow.

His voice heard above, to the side and below,

But heed to his call, as your goosebumps grow.

He tells of a night, filled with candy and fright,

Indeed Aurum tells of Halloween night!

Cool Autumn air, with a spooky hoot flair,

The crunch of dry leaves, fallen down from the trees.

Listen, don't tarry, we're off to make merry,

It's All Hallow's Eve, ... and you thought this was scary.

In Welsh, Aurum means Gold, and this little Owl brings
with him the Midas touch. Golden leaves in the Autumn,
the warm glow of a crackly fire,
and the amber of Halloween carmel for apples and popcorn. Yum!. :-)

I've been doing major construction and building a new business/artists Facebook page, following the lead of my fellow artists. (Yes, it's different from the Personal Page)

Facebook has made several changes, which have now made it much easier for visitors to link to artists blogs, photos galleries, and Etsy shops, all of which is making for

a nice one stop sees all (almost) experience! :-)
Talk about making things easier.... Oh Wow! I've only just, figured out
how to link an image! WhooHoo! I'll master this blogging yet! lol

Gwallter the Welsh Goblin

It's time for the EHAG Artist Challenge and here is my piece

"Gwallter, the Welsh Goblin"

Goblins are a very different and often grotesque variety of gnomes. They are small, mischievous creatures that revel in harassing and annoying humankind with their pranks. They are often playful, but they have a spiteful and selfish nature and are prone rudeness. They love to throw rocks, alter signposts, hide objects, and they’ll stick their tongue out at you if confronted. Goblins inhabit much of the world and can be found near rocky outcroppings and around the roots of ancient trees at the forests edge.

Around St Patrick’s Day Goblins are said to play tricks on the Leprechauns as well, which causes much hoopla in the Fairy world. The Leprechauns, also known as Fairy Cobblers have a dislike for Goblins because they have a habit of hiding their shoe buckles in the hollows of oak trees.

Halloween is the Goblins favorite time as they are more prone to Tricks than Treats.

“Gwallter” has been caught hiding a Halloween Ghost pumpkin, so, in true Goblin form,

he has stuck out his tongue to nettle you further.

Lots of This and That ....

Look what was blooming in my garden yesterday! Ha Cha!

You would think, as lovely as this is that I'd have more, but,

I only have this one Hyacynth along side the driveway and each year it gives a beautiful show.

Somehow I thought the Skunks would dig up the bulbs but they havn't so maybe I need to plant some more.

The Grand Canyon Rose in the front is budding out and this is it's first bloom of the year.

You may wonder where I've been... well....

The rain seems to have subsided for a bit, and with our lovely weather, I've been trying to get a jump on the garden and Spring cleaning. I had a lot of catching up to do having been out of commission,

and slowly but surly it's nearly caught up.

I'd best get moving too, because I have several art pieces awaiting thier finishing touches, AND

Next week there will be a special piece listed for the first EHAG art challenge of the year!

EHAG (Eclectic Halloween Artists Group) is hosting an art challenge so

you don't want to miss this one!

I'll close with the view outside my front door of this fantastic sunset!

It looked like the sky was on fire it was so brillant. So far this year we've had several

shows similar to this at dusk. How exciting to see the other night, albeit for a few seconds, the Space Shuttle

Discovery fly across the sky one last time. A wonderous thing!

Spring is Springing Sporadically while Buns look on

This is a little WIP gentleman that I'm working on, to be revealed soon.

He'll be my first attempt at a sewn outfit, so wish me luck. So far, I'm more at home with a paint brush

in my hands than needle and thread. Those pins are more dangerous than the thorns on a rose bush!

While the rest of the nation is bound by the chilling grips of snow and ice, here in Southern California

we've been receiving a glimpse now and then of Springs arrival.

The Flowering Pear Trees in the front are in full bloom once again and it's refreshing to see

the honey bees flitting about gathering their sweet perfumed nectar.

The Margarite Daisies have all set their blooms and warm their faces in the sun.

It's been so nice this week that I was able to finish up the orchid shade house and

moved all of the plants into their new home. I think they look very happy in their new abode.

This little fellow is so happy he's tickled pink. :-)

Baba Renaissance Crow, tonight at the EHAG Emporium!

Tonight is another wonderful unveiling of fun original Halloween Art from the talented artists of EHAG!

The 31st of another month is upon us, and the EHAG Emporium once again swings open it's doors

for the first time this year, tonight at 9:00pm (EST).

After a bit of teasing and a pretty much, non descriptive sneak peek in an earlier post, (hehe)

here is my EHAG piece for this month!

"Baba Crow, Ready to Trick or Treat"

This kookie little guy lives cosily in his nest, high above the ground, in a grand ol Oak tree

at ye local Renaissance Faire.

Since he was hatched, he's dreamed of Halloween night and so, has taken inspiration for his

Halloween costume from the Lords and ladies of the Shire below.

Neath the light of the moon and the shadow of Autumn colored leaves,

little Baba created his special togs.

He dons a Jester type cap, carries a smiling harvest moon staff

and also sports a candy corn bandolier and miniature pumpkin treat bucket.

He's even decorated his nest, as crows do, with a wee little Jack o Lantern and a touch of orange.

He can hardly wait till sundown on All Hallow's Eve. Hazzah!

I'm finally, although a bit belated, listing the piece that was published in

the 2010 Winter edition of the Celebrate 365 magazine.

Presenting

"Comfort & Joy"!

Little Comfort has gathered sticks and twigs from the shrubs edge,

and is peddling his firewood to the passers by.

His lovely wife Joy, is preparing their humble Christmas cheese,

atop an old White Birch stump,

and much like a plum pudding, it's complete with traditional holly.

Comfort sits atop an old wooden spool, and it's most clear indeed that

these two mousies are devoted one another through both prosperous and meager times.

They are both hand sculpted of Papermache, and are mounted on a round wooden base.

A dusting of German Glass Glitter completes their Wintery scene.

I'd like to thank Connie Porcher of Celebrate 365 Magazine, to whom

Poe's Midnight Dreary.....

Today is the Birthday of the American poet

Edgar Allan Poe, born January 19th 1809.

In honor of his birth, the PFATT group issued an art Challenge for it's members to

create a piece specifically for this day.

My piece is a hand sculpted Raven made of Paperclay, and he is perched upon

the name POE which is cut from Fir wood then painted and aged.

There is a woodburned rose to symbolize Poe's undying love.

I'm finally back in commission! Ha Cha!... well, nearly.

I wanted to thank all of my friends and family who have been so generously supportive after my surgery and

for the wonderful outpouring of love and healing energy.

Being in the natural health world, I've opted to go a Homeopathic/Holistic route for treatment,

and so far I'm doing most excellent!

As part of my therapy, I helped my Dad as he built what I'm calling my "Healing Bench". Being a lover of plants, I've always wanted a greenhouse, but since space doesn't allow, my Dad has built this beautiful three tiered bench for my orchids! My step-Dad had previously built this mini pergola. (yes, we all get along great!) So combine the two and you have a beautiful orchid shade house!

Isn't it super!

Since this photo, I've finished staining it and just need a few more finishing touches, such as the overhead shade cloth and little copper caps for the posts, before the orchids move in.

Boy, sorting through the lumber stacks at Lowe's, and lifting and reaching, (albeit in slow motion) have really done wonders to help get my muscles back up to speed. Now I just need some Myofascial Release sessions to address the fascia and scar tissue and I'll be good as new!

I'll post a photo of the completed project later.

Roger's Gardens and Meeting fellow EHAG Artist Debbee Thibault

At the last minute I read that Debbee Thibault, well known folk artist and fellow EHAG member,

was going to be at a signing event at Roger's Gardens in Newport Beach, CA.

Rogers isn't far from my home so I headed over to see what I could see.

Every season, Roger's is decorated to the hilt and going into this Christmas season

is no exception. This beautiful nursery is always elaborately graced with fine ornaments, 10ft decorated

Christmas trees, each with a different color and texture theme set among fine antiques,

beautiful art work, and plants and arrangements to die for.

I've always stood in front of the display cases that house the works of Vaillancourt, Christopher Radko, and Debbee Thibault with eyes full of wonder and admiration for their fun designs.

There was a special table set up for Debbee today with a little Christmas tree loaded with her special ornaments, and when there was a slight lul between crowds, I went up and introduced myself as a fellow EHAGer and that brought on a big smile.

She was friendly and most gracious as we chatted about sculpting techniques, and her fun art pieces.

You would think I would have taken a photo... but alas no. Silly me.

In the same room there were some works by another EHAG artist, Vergie Lightfoot. Last month I missed her Halloween signing, and Bethany Lowe's too! (I didn't know about it), by one day! I did get to see the few pieces she had left, (such as the kitty below)... I kind of snuk (is that a word?) this photo.... and

they were so amazing!

Vergi had some very Whimsical and Wintery looking pieces there today and as usual,

those signature kooky Marty Feldman like eyes gazing back at you. So fun!

If you're in the area of Newport Beach, California, you might want to pop over there

to have a peep. The fragrant fresh trees, garlands and Poinsettias will be there in a few weeks.

It's a nice place to visit, especially at Christmas!

I can hardly believe it!

"Brimstone the Gourd Goblin" has won third place

in the Martha Stewart 2010 Halloween Creations Contest!

There were so many wonderful and creative entries, and I'm so pleased and honored to have been chosen!

A big Thank You to Martha Stewart Living and to Grandin Road!

This last month has been filled to overflow with various projects, and of course

with the holidays approaching commissioned work and Fall and Halloween art is slowly

shifting to Christmas and even Spring works.

The Morning Glory's are still blooming boldly as many of my garden perennials begin to fade.

This beautiful green spider has set up residence on the last of the Borage and Anise.

The Orange Weaver is in full fall plumage in the Aviary, and fits the season's

color palette perfectly.

These lovely Sunflowers were a gift from my dear and oldest friend, Connie. We've known each

other slightly more than 50 years, since we were wee tots and she's always ever thoughtful.

I thought I would share with you and the reason for the flowers, as well as an explanation

for why my postings and artwork have been a bit sparse of late, and perhaps why they may

be higglety pigglety for a few weeks more.

Recently appointments to the doctors and the subsequent tests have confirmed that

I have IDC (Infiltrating Ductal Carsinoma)/breast cancer. Phooey.

Needless to say these sick breasts and I will need to part ways, but don't despair!

They're not who I am, and I should be able to make a full recovery and get back

to my gardening, art and horses within a few weeks.

I'm truly looking on the lighter side of things....

As a rider, I will no longer have to be irritated by bouncing bazooms at the sitting trot!

I only tend to get dressed up once every 10years or so to attend a wedding or formal function of some sort, so that's no biggie because I'm really just a jeans and T-shirt kind of gal anyway.

And my camera strap won't get hung up when I'm traipsing through the forest's

shrubs, twigs and stickers looking for little creatures to photograph.

I'm confident things will work out fine, and I'm looking forward to creating lots of new pieces while recuperating!

Where in the world has the time gone! Can you believe it's nearly Halloween already!

I must apologize for not posting in my usual weekly manner. Some of you may not be aware that

last month was the start of the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky and I've been busy designing the booth and new website

for the IEBWA (International Equine Body Worker Association.. which I am chair of) and

I thought I would share some of what has been taking so much of my time.

This was the conceptual rendering of the booth and graphics, and it ended up looking spot on in person.

Now that the WEG is over with, hopefully I'll be able to get back into my much missed art...

What's Blooming Wednesday and Reptilian Smiles

We're lucky here in the city, in that we don't really have snakes

but we do have lots of Western Lizards that live here in the garden.

This little fellow was on the wall, supervising me cleaning out the spa.

This is a Confederate Rose, which is actually a variety of Hibiscus.

It's blossoms are often a good 5 inches across, and although short lived

they are a wonderful suprise overhanging the pond.

This time of year we also have a few of these jumbo Japanese Beetles zooming around.

This green guy was taking in the fragrance of the Sweet Pea Bush.

The Bower Vine, or Humming Bird Vine creeps it's way up the pine tree and

                                                 blooms most of the Spring and Summer.
                   This plant was a gift, mailed to us by my Grandma Tinnon, back in the early 80's.
            It's amazing to look back and realize that what was once a dormant little twig of a thing, in a
                  4" pot, has grown to elegant proportions, generously yielding abundant orange blossoms

and remembrances of her, from year to year.

How: Parents email an image of your little ghoul's Halloween themed artwork to ehaagartists@hotmail.com along with the young artist's name, age, date, contact info, title of piece and medium used.

Prize: $100 gift certificate for art supplies from the winner's art supply store of choice.

Be as creative as possible and all artwork must be created solely by the young artist. We ask that no gore be depicted. Artwork will be judged based on originality and use of medium, and all mediums will be accepted. (All EHAG family members are excluded from participation.)

The artists of EHAG are obviously not the first generation to create Halloween art, and we certainly will not be the last. So, we decided to sponsor a kid's art contest that both celebrates our most favorite holiday and nurtures their creative spirit! And, as we know that there must be children out there that love both art and Halloween, why not begin to encourage them today!

Aug WIP and a pre Autumn Surprise!

While the rest of the country has been roasting in triple digit temperatures,

here on the coast we've been lucky so far with a pretty constant 74 degrees. Ahhhh

Of course, our warmest is usually Sept, but I'm hoping for more coolness to welcome in the Fall.

I can taste the candy corn now!

Here is my July EHAG Emporium offering...

"Brimstone", the Gourd Goblin.

This little GG is 6 3/4" to stem tip and 5 1/2" wide.

He snitched the 12" Witch's broom, which has a real Sulphur Crystal imbedded in it.

Brimstone is hand sculpted of Paper Clay and as you can tell,

he's quite the muscular fellow... you see... Gourd Goblins creep about in the dark of night...

neath piles of leaves, and stacked straw. Often, a glimpse is taken

of them moving about on their stubby vine legs

in the odd corn field and empty pumpkin patch.

His little Broom can be gently moved ... Or, did he do that himself?

Brimstone is signed and numbered 1/1, Original.

Have a Safe and Sane 4th of July!

Whoo Hoo! It's that time of year again, when the quiet of the morning is uplifted with crackling firecrackers,

and the occasional familiar Piccolo Pete whistle!

There was always a sense of anticipation when you would see the Red Devil Fireworks stands

starting to pop up all over town.

Those stands were such a magical thing, and there was something about the glow of the exposed light bulbs, the red, white, and blue packages and the wafting smell of gun powder and starter punks in the air.

There was always that hope that your Dad might spring for the deluxe assortment box with the extra giant cones, and maybe a roman candle or two or three! "Roman Candle? No, they don't sell those here!" Can we get the big box then?!

Of course we had to have a few boxes of sparklers! They used to only come in a brilliant white, but in later years, we could buy sparklers that threw off red, or green sparks. What fun, spinning them round and round, or writing your name in the air with the brightly glowing and spitting sparkler stick.

I was always mesmerized by the snakes. They always seemed the most difficult to light and my Dad would say, "That's going to make a mark on the sidewalk", so we would "grow" our snakes on the edge of the driveway. How did they do that?! Those long winding black sooty snakes would curl and just keep on growing like a Phoenix, from that little round disk.

One of the last fireworks to be pulled from the box was the little, put together yourself, "Clipper Cabin". Oh! What does it do?!... well.... My Dad always carefully assembled the little country cabin and lit the cone... and we waited... and waited... and the chiminey started smoking. Ahhhh. Peace on the Frontier,,, until we'd ignite the whole thing and it would burn in a blaze of glory! lol

And then there was Joe.

He wasn't one of the flashy, sparkly, glowing, fizzing and whistling fireworks. You simply unfolded his little cardboard stand and lit his Hobo stogie and watched the glowing embers.

Unlike the cabin, we extinguished his cigar before it got too close to his face.

But... I guess Joe was at the heart of the "Safe and Sane" Red Devil campaign and from a simpler time.

I don't know why, but "Smokey Joe" was one of my all time favorites. :-)

4th of July!

Headless Horseman at the EHAG Emporium tonight!

Beware the Headless Horseman!

This is a relief sculpture of Paper Mache', which is sculpted directly onto Mahogany wood.

I cut out the design, then sanded and prepared the surface with Gesso.

Once my sculpture was completed, I then painted the details in a rustic style,

reminscent of the old antique cast iron door stops.

My painting style incorporates many layers of acrylic washes. This technique creates an aged effect

which should be seen to truly appreciate.

Because of these many layers, this technique is wonderful visually, yet is extremely challenging

to light and photograph so as to show the pieces true colors

and I've done my best to represent them as accurately as possible.

The low hanging Autumn moon is mounted on a brass rod and set back from

the main piece, and is removable.

The dimensions are 7 1/4" (H) x 5 3/4" (W)

It's mounted on a wooden base and the entire piece is lightly sealed.

This piece is a signed and numbered one of a kind marked 1/1

This California Poppy has been blooming so beautifully, yet,

the morning after I took this photo I went out and found that the

Raccoons had lounged upon it's soft leaves and petals during the night, and flattened the entire plant beyond recognition.

This was the first Button Quail fledgling that needed to be brought in from the aviary.

Sometimes the Papa is a bit agressive with the younsters and bowls them over... and over.. so often the chicks need to be put into a brooder for protection for a short while.

He was the smallest of the clutch and so cute.

The Cape Honeysuckle is into it's third flush of color this season.

The Hummingbirds just love it!

This is the bloom from one of the Carnivorous pitcher plants. Amazing!

Looks like I'll be harvesting Crooknecked Squash and Cucumber before long. Yum!

Spirits of witches, pumpkin, scarecrow and owl,

Tis not the scup, but fires castings of dust,

Some with embers, some with rust;

Sleeping then creeping to hearth from the Tinder,

Looking eerily spooky all covered with Cinders;

A frightful charred sight than you've ever seen,

They appear from the soot on this, Halloween!

Some lovely Pink Delphinium

When I bought this bush years ago, I was told they were Scottish Bluebells.

I've since seen them in a garden book under another name.... but alas...

I cannot put my hands on it... so.. Bluebells they are!

This is a bush that grows to amazing heights and on the end of each towering stalk

grows vibrant bundles of purple blue trumpet flowers. The bush is just getting going and I'll

show you more photos later.

This is a drought tolerant Pink Rock Rose. The blossoms

remind me of Dogwood flowers.

I was slowed down a bit yesterday while dead heading the flowers and

trimming the groundcover. I was pulling the pine needles out from under the roses when ouch!

... At first I thought it was just a jab from a thorn, (which is usually nothing) but it quickly began to sting rather much and when I looked down, I'd grabed a honey bee that was on the ground! People are always telling me I should wear gloves,

but I much prefer to feel the soil and plant textures with my bare hands.

I've never

been stung by a bee before, and I must say... I don't recommend it.

Who would have expected a bee in there anyway?

Sneek peek at "Cinder Folk" Coming Soon..

As you can see, I've really been playing with antiquing techniques and

I'm really pleased with the textures on this guy.

He's just about done, just a few more finishing touches.

The tricky bit is maintaining some semblance of consistency with the many layers, and

that's easier said than done.

I can't tell you how many pieces I've experimented on, only to have nothing occur when I applied

the resist, or WAY too much...Eeeeee.... but, it's a very fun process and

they're looking forward to making their debut.

Also, my Dad's eye surgery went very well, and thank you to all

who sent well wishes! :-)

What's Blooming Wednesday...

Today I'm dedicating this post to my Dad who's having eye surgery this afternoon. They're repairing a torn Retina and a hole in the Macula.

My Dad has an amazing rose garden up in Oregon and so I thought I would start off with a rose, since they're one of his favorites.

This is a Julia Child- floribunda rose.

It's bright yellow color is reminisant of the golden light of the sun bringing brightness to our day.

My Tallandsia has been secretly blooming on the side of the garage.

Ever enduring, strength in every situation and environment and

a surprise of remarkable color. Always there to please.

One of the largest Double Delight blossoms I've ever seen!

Double the happiness means double the smiles.

Growing among the ferns is the Yesterday Today and Tomorrow bush.

This interesting plant blooms dark purple the first day, fades to lavender the second day and tomorrow will further fade to near white. Bringing color and brightness to the shadows and always a delight.

Black & White Fright and What's Blooming the day before Blooming Wednesday!

Here he is! My EHAG Black & White Fright piece!

This is "Spooky Hoot", and he's listing on ebay this afternoon at 4:00pm.

He's a long way from my first visions for the B & W challenge as my initial thoughts went in the direction of the old film noir horror films. The more I thought about it though, my mind would keep returning to the realm of whimsy and wildlife... and so... Spooky Hoot was born.

An artist's mind is often jumping from one idea to the next and I've found it's usually best to just go with the flow, because if you don't, a form of "writer's block" can take over and doesn't get you anywhere.

As my Metalsmith instructor, Kristen Beeler, is always fond of saying: Just keep moving forward. :-)

Here are some blooms for this week.

This weekend my Mom and I went on the Mary Lou Heard Memorial garden tour.

The day before, it had been a wind storm that I'm sure created havoc with those gardeners that were preparing for the hundreds of guests that would be arriving the following morning.

I thought I would share some of the lovely flowers that were on display.

Birds and Booms Wednesday....

Good Morning or afternoon, as the case my be. Today I'm offering a few different photos than usual, except for the exception above, which is an exceptional Cecile Brunner Climbing Rose. This little bush is about 25yrs old and is the last of four that used to be along side the driveway.

Since replanting the driveway planter, I've put in a variety of sun loving plants. In addition to the roses, there are two varieties of Lavendar. This blossom is Allardi Lavendar which is a cross. It booms all year and is one of the more fragrant. The leaves smell most heavenly when pruning them!

This flower is from one of my Carnivorous Pitcher Plants. Actually, because this is the first time I've ever

seen this, I'm not sure if it's a bloom or seeds.... I'll have to look it up. At any rate, it's very unusual and I think it's a sign the plant is happy in it's location.

I have planted aviaries with a variety of predominatly finches and song birds. In early morning and late afternoon, everyone is happily singing and chirping and it's so pleasant to hear them when I'm outside gardening.

These are little fledgling Lady Gouldian Finch. It's amazing how well they blend into the landscaping with their olive coloring as little baba's. The parent birds are moulting, so are not the most photogenic at the moment. I'll snap some shots of them in a few weeks, when they have finished the moult, as I think you'll be most surprised at the difference in the juveniles and the vibrant adult colors.
